Office of Aging takes papal words of wisdom to heart

When it comes to the quality of care of older Americans, age 65 and over, the Office of Aging of the Archdiocese takes to heart the words of wisdom by Pope Benedict XVI: “It’s beautiful to be old…The quality of a society, I’d say a civilization, is judged by how well it treats its elderly.” (November 2012, Rome).

Catholic schools around the nation will band together to observe the contribution that these institutions of education make to the world around us. Along with many U.S. Catholic schools, the Archdiocese will celebrate Catholic Schools Week from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6. This year’s theme for this annual occasion is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

Pope Francis house dedicated at volunteer gathering

Every Saturday from Sept. 19 through Oct. 17, groups of Catholic young adults ages 18 to 35 spent their day building a house in honor of Pope Francis. On Dec. 19, many of the 300 volunteers returned for the blessing and dedication of Pope Francis House, presided by Msgr. Frank Rossi, pastor of St. Michael Church in Houston. In addition, the volunteers had the opportunity to meet the family who will be moving into the home.

While today communities serve in a variety of ministries, in the early years their work was more concentrated, particularly in the areas of mission and parish work, of education, and of health care and social service work.
