11th Annual In Memoria concert to be held at the Co-Cathedral Nov. 24

On Sunday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m., the Archdiocesan Choir, under the direction of Dr. Richard Lopez of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston’s Office of Worship, will perform the Houston premiere of Frank La Rocca’s Mass of the Americas at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart as part of the choir’s 11th annual In Memoria concert.

Mother church of Texas, Mary statue begins months-long restoration effort

The Blessed Virgin Mary might have the best views of all Galveston Island, sunrise or sunset. But for now, the statue of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, has been temporarily removed from atop the historic St. Mary Cathedral Basilica as both the statue and church receive facelifts.

Archbishop Fiorenza, Prejean honored as leaders of movements to end capital punishment

Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A. Fiorenza was among the three honorees at the ceremony hosted by the Catholic Mobilizing Network on the World Day Against the Death Penalty, Oct. 10, at the Vatican Embassy in Washington. Other honorees were Karen Clifton, founder of the network, and Sister Helen Prejean, a sister of St. Joseph of Medaille who is a longtime opponent of capital punishment.
