Consecrated virgins: a heart of the Catholic Church

The Consecration of a virgin is one of the oldest sacramentals in the Church, and one of the fruits of Vatican II was the restoration of this profound blessing on virgins living in the world. The promulgation of this restored rite for women living in the world was on May 31, 1970.

Parishes embrace spirituality of communion

Three years ago, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo outlined a plan on how Catholic people and parishes in the Archdiocese can move towards a future that embraces a spirituality of communion. Fast forward through group listening sessions where the faithful shared their pastoral hopes and needs, creation of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan, and the formation of Parish Action Plans, about 40 parishes have shared their successes embracing spirituality of communion. Recently, their 43 success stories were added to the Archdiocesan website under Pastoral Plan.

Local author’s new book encourages families to promote parish vocations

Rhonda Gruenewald, a parishioner at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, took inspiration from Pope Francis, who said “No vocation is born of itself or lives for itself. A vocation flows from the heart of God and blossoms in the good soil of faithful people,” and wrote “Hundredfold, A Guide to Parish Vocation Ministry” in an effort to encourage and develop vocation ministries in every parish.

Fount of the Church’s power flows through Liturgy

Last year, Pope Francis called for a renewed commitment to Vatican II’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, which defines the Liturgy as “the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed... the fount from which all the Church’s power flows” (CSL 10). The pope called for a renewal in the “commitment to receive and implement” the document’s teaching in a fuller manner.

Catholic Schools Office unveils new look, continues tradition

Last month the Catholic Schools Office (CSO) of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston unveiled a new logo and a fresh look for Catholic education. The CSO also has a new look of its own, with a revamped department structure that will help emphasize the importance of Catholic education and improve support to the respective school staffs and communities.
