A 'BRIGHTEST' POINT OF LIGHT: BELOVED 41 REMEMBERED
Houston's religious, civic leaders, clergy and lay faithful paid tribute to the 41st U.S. President. Through the week of national remembrance, many focused on his courage, dedication and life of service.
Founded in 1869, Annunciation Catholic Church is grounded in a tradition of Catholic faith and service. As the second Catholic church established in Houston and at one time serving the entire Catholic population of Houston, it is often crowded with many people drawn to a reverent and spiritual atmosphere and Masses.
Because of my family’s tradition, I am drawn toward Nativity sets during the Christmas season. This year, however, as I notice the Holy Family on display, I have a heightened awareness of recent headlines, especially the many people fleeing Central America.
I realize that there are actually two Christmas seasons. The commercial driven Christmas that ends on Dec. 24 and the Christmas of the Catholic Church, which begins with the vigil Mass on Dec. 24. The first is a season that has been distorted by commercialism, secularism and relativism.
