Resurrecting history: Repairs continue at St. Mary Basilica

Repairs at St. Mary Basilica, the first Cathedral of Texas, are still underway in Galveston. Damaged heavily during Hurricane Ike in September 2008, the Basilica is being repaired from the ground up.

Social Balance: Religious liberty not a Catholic issue but an American issue

In April of this year, the Ad Hoc Committee of the Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty.” The statement expressed the bishops’ concerns over the threats to religious freedom and called for a Fortnight for Freedom from June 21 to July 4. The fortnight period is designated as a time of prayer and reflection, education and action to promote and protect religious liberty.

Echoing the Word: Evangelizing others with joy and knowledge

Recently we celebrated the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost. In the first reading on Ascension, two men dressed in white address the Apostles saying, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?” On Pentecost we experience the followers of Jesus in the Upper Room as the Holy Spirit descended on them and, on fire with Christ, they left the Upper Room to valiantly and exuberantly proclaim the mighty acts of God.

CSI: Educating youth to be instruments of God’s peace

On the first day of this year, Pope Benedict XVI delivered his message on the celebration of the World Day of Peace and entitled it “Educating Young People In Justice and Peace.” Pope Benedict devotes his message to youth because of his “conviction that the young, with their enthusiasm and idealism, can offer new hope to the world.”
