Port Chaplaincy finds new ways to form ‘Fishers of Men’

As Jesus instructs each of his followers to make disciples of all nations, to be “fishers of men,” the Gospel message is to be delivered to all ends of the earth — land, air and sea. The Port Chaplaincy of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is following this command by offering sacramental and pastoral care to the Catholic seafarers from around the world who enter the ports in Galveston, Barbour’s Cut and the Port of Houston.

Little saint of mercy draws crowds of faithful

Catholics from all across Gulf Coast filled the pews of three Houston Catholic churches for a chance to venerate the youngest saint ever canonized by the Catholic Church. Inspired by Pope Francis’ proclamation of a Holy Year of Mercy, which begins next month on Dec. 8, 11-year-old St. Maria Goretti’s major relics traveled to 20 states on what was called a “pilgrimage of mercy.”

Amid holiday bustle, Nativity scenes share Christmas’ true meaning

Although the fall colors have yet to truly settle in, shopping centers and store fronts across the city are decked out in holiday decorations reminding us that Christmas is just around the corner. These signs of the coming Christmas holiday, often colorful lights, massive Christmas trees and larger-than-life twinkling gift boxes, are many times absent of the original Christmas story: the Nativity scene of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and the Christ Child swaddled and lying in a manger.

Discalced Carmelite Nuns of New Caney dedicate lives to prayer

The Discalced Carmelite Nuns of New Caney are a small community of contemplative women whose lives are dedicated to prayer for the Church and for all people. Originally located in Houston, the community moved in 1974 to New Caney, a wooded area at the northern section of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
