For Robert and Donna Stokes it was love at first sight when they met more than 50 years ago while standing in a cafeteria line at the University of Houston. Ten months later, they were married at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Galveston.

Pope Francis house dedicated at volunteer gathering

Every Saturday from Sept. 19 through Oct. 17, groups of Catholic young adults ages 18 to 35 spent their day building a house in honor of Pope Francis. On Dec. 19, many of the 300 volunteers returned for the blessing and dedication of Pope Francis House, presided by Msgr. Frank Rossi, pastor of St. Michael Church in Houston. In addition, the volunteers had the opportunity to meet the family who will be moving into the home.

Cardinal DiNardo opens “Holy Doors of Mercy” welcoming the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

Earlier this year, Pope Francis declared that the Catholic Church would celebrate the Year of Mercy, an Extraordinary Jubilee. In announcing this special year, the Pope said that “Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, n. 10).

Camp Kappe, a retreat center located on a 130-acre tract of heavily wooded rolling land approximately one hour north of Houston in Plantersville, has recently made major improvements to meet the growing needs of the Catholic schools and parishes in the Archdiocese and surrounding communities.
