TOROK: Seeking God through the beauty of Christian art

One year when the retreat fell on my birthday, a team member who was an artist by hobby gave me a sketch he had drawn as a birthday gift. It was an image of a man at a potter’s wheel. I kept the sketch in a place where I could periodically pause and pray with it.

Transitional Deacons Jose Rodrigo Alonso Gonzalez, Ricardo Arriola Gonzalez, Justin Michael Cormie, David Michael Moses, Kingsley Nwoko, Ryan Andrew Stawaisz and “Vincent” Thinh Trân will be ordained at a Mass at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on June 1.

Bishop Sheltz: Newly ordained transitional deacons called to be ‘great witnesses of His love in service’

The Ordination of Transitional Deacons, held Saturday, May 18 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, brought three men to the next step in their journey to the priesthood. Mark Andrew Hebert, Thuc Huu Nguyen and Eduardo Ivan Rivera, CSB, were ordained to the Sacred Order of the Diaconate through the imposition of hands and the invocation of the Holy Spirit by Auxiliary Bishop George A. Sheltz.

Faithful rally after storms flood St. Martha School

St. Martha Catholic School in Kingwood was impacted by major flooding after heavy rains pushed two to four inches of rain into the school buildings when at least 10 inches of rain fell May 7. Seminar guides seniors to modify homes as they age

The Office of Aging Ministry helped organize a seminar for seniors, with the first held May 15 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. About 100 attendees from more than 15 different churches participated.

San José Clinic honors volunteer health providers at 12th annual Art With Heart

San José Clinic, a 97-year-old health clinic for the underserved in the Houston metropolitan area, recently held their 12th annual Art with Heart fundraising event at the Bayou City Ballroom in downtown Houston. The May 2 event honored the clinic’s volunteer dental and medical providers, represented by James Lloyd, D.D.S. and Mary Neal, M.D., with the Portrait of Compassion Award.

Through the lens of prayer, deacons are formed for a lifetime of service, ministry

Forming men who serve Christ and the Church in ordained ministry as a permanent deacon requires looking through the lens of prayer. Whether a man is currently in formation, recently ordained, or has been ordained for half his lifetime. One of 60 ministries supported by the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF), the Office of the Permanent Diaconate benefits greatly through the generous contributions of the faithful.
