Statement re: Flooding in Houston and surrounding area

I ask the faithful to please join me in prayer for those affected by the recent flooding in Houston and the surrounding areas. I am grateful for the rescue efforts being facilitated by not only emergency response teams, but also volunteers aiding their neighbors during these challenging circumstances.

Pope Francis is a good shepherd. The "Good Shepherd" knows his sheep and calls them by name. Today the Holy Father has presented his much awaited Post Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, "Amoris Laetitia," "The Joy of Love," On Love in the Family.

I am writing this column a week before you receive the Texas Catholic Herald. As this time, the Holy Father has already come to Mexico to begin his pilgrimage of faith to that important country, a place dear to the many parishioners in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston who are from Mexico.
