Our Catholic Archdiocesan newspaper publishes only one issue in August. It tends to be both a review of summer and a looking ahead to the many activities of the fall, especially in our schools. I want to use my column more as a review because I was privileged to be a part of many magnificent events in our local Church this summer, some of which I would like to share with you. They have helped to provide some ballast for me in the midst of recent months filled with disquieting events and violence around the world and in our country. The beautiful events here keep us from losing our joy and boldness about the Gospel.
In July the National Association of Pastoral Musicians held their annual Convention here in Houston for the first time and joined with Unity Explosion, a gathering of liturgical musicians of Region X (the Southwest) of African American descent. The result was a wonderful display of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural music, a vast number of workshops and showcases, of concerts and intense training in skills for musicians, cantors, choirs, music directors and instrumentalists. From the Convention Center and the Hilton Hotel thousands of musicians gathered and fanned out to churches and other places to listen, perform and celebrate. Our own Archdiocesan Choir performed the exquisite Durufle Requiem, a classic of the 20th Century, and did it with a dedication and precision that won great admiration. Every form of music was celebrated and analyzed from chant to baroque anthems, from Asian liturgical music to psalmody and Mass settings in Gospel style. The richness of styles was matched by local Texan hospitality, the latter commented upon by almost everyone who came! It was a genuine week of improving techniques and musicianship, of being inspired by making beautiful music, and of being challenged to recognize and incorporate the riches of so many cultures that exist in the Catholic people of the United States. I had the privilege of being Main Celebrant of a great and moving Eucharistic Liturgy on Thursday evening praying for the Unity of the Church revealed in so many distinctive colors of our liturgical heritage, past and present. I think that our many local churches in the State of Texas contributed greatly to the success of this meeting and were themselves enriched by others. The sound of the human voice singing at the Liturgy is one of our great forces of hope since the grace of Christ is so freely given in the sacraments and moves us to respond with gratitude and grace, the very “definition” of music in the liturgy. My thanks go to many for such an occasion of hope!
During July our Office for Young Adult and Campus Ministry continued its yearly summer Café Catolica, a Monday evening of prayer, speaker and discussion that takes place at one of our parishes, this year at St. Vincent de Paul. The Monday night that I came for Mass, dinner and discussion, almost 1,000 young adults were present. This year the three weeks were dedicated to the Year of Mercy and the multiple meanings of encountering God’s mercy and how Jesus is also seeking us out. I thoroughly enjoyed the encounter, the questions, some of which were difficult and profitable for discussion, and the solidarity and seriousness of faith of these young adults. They are, for me, a leaven and yeast since they are the ones who work or study with other adults who may be far from faith or the Church or who might be curious about us but would not approach the Church. These young adults are the Church in their witness, their questions and their spirit of commitment. I am impressed every year by these sessions which provide me much food for thought and enable me as shepherd to accompany adults in their faith formation and their challenges in living the Gospel.
At the end of July through the great work of the Office of Adolescent Catechesis and Evangelization the staff, the Youth Council and other youth leaders, both local and national, celebrated the yearly youth conference. Close to 3,000 teenagers and their youth leaders and chaperones converged on the Convention Center and the Hilton Hotel and other places and turned their energy into times of formation and listening and discussion, times of prayer and contemplation, and times of great fun and renewed friendships in the Lord. I was privileged to help celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation that Saturday together with scores of other priests and to be main Celebrant at the final Youth Awards and Eucharistic Liturgy on Sunday morning. The theme of the Rally was “Blessed” as in “Blessed are the merciful,” a theme that tied the conference to the Year of Mercy. The keynote speakers were substantial in the content they gave about Catholic Faith and the young people were serious and funny, with an energy that makes you tired just watching them. There was a beautiful Saturday Evening of Prayer and Eucharistic Exposition; the reverence and silence of so many young people was palpable and an incredible source of beauty. The challenges our teenagers face in living and understanding their faith today are enormous and almost endless. But the boldness of faith that I saw in these young women and men was also enormous. The whole weekend provided me still another example of much good and of much seriousness of purpose of so many members of the Church here in Galveston-Houston.
Cielo Abierto is a major musical Holy Hour and moment of teaching and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament for members of our various Hispanic communities. I participated in the final evening at the Catholic Charismatic Center and there were a few thousand people present with their families. It is also a kind of celebration of praise and worship music in a Hispanic idiom. The fervor and prayerfulness of the assembly were matched by the exuberance and intensity of the music. Such participation helps to cement emotional fervor with Catholic content, a factor that is important for the always growing number of peoples who come here from all places in Mexico, Central and South America and beyond.
I had the pleasure of meeting a number of women and men on a weekend retreat of discernment for consecrated life and priesthood. It is a pleasure to speak to adults who give serious consideration to the Lord’s call and where it might lead them in a response to their baptismal commitment. The Mass and luncheon with them were high moments of a recent Sunday. Also, I met with our 50-plus seminarians last week, 13 of them brand new, to speak, have a question and answer session and to celebrate the Liturgy together at the close of their special convocation before they return to their seminaries for the fall semester. I am elated to see and be with our seminarians. I ask you to keep storming heaven that they persevere in their formation and, if it be God’s will, reach the priesthood in service to this Archdiocese. I can assure you of the seriousness of these young men, their solidarity with one another, and their genuine desire to serve THIS local Church. May God bless them!
On Aug. 5 the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was filled to the brim for the Opening School Mass for principals, administrators staff and teachers of our Catholic Schools. Awards for teachers were also distributed after Mass. Since it was a feast Day for the Blessed Virgin Mary, I used the occasion of the Gospel of the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth to emphasize in my homily the qualities of contemplation, hospitality and action in the life of Mary. These are significant markers for all those engaged in the education and formation of our children and youth in Catholic schools. The importance of beauty and religious imagination can never be neglected as we educate the human person! I want to salute our Schools’ Office, our principals and most especially all teachers who bring a true hope-filled commitment to their duties and their activities.
There were many other events, like the July Prayer Breakfast, the Day of Recollection sponsored by the ACTS Retreat movement and still other celebrations that dotted the summer landscape in the Archdiocese. I have recalled a few events to help encourage you as they have encouraged me that the challenges we face, which are many, have a source for resolution and solution — you! That is, we are with God’s grace the hope filled people of commitment to the cause of the Gospel and mercy, to the reconciliation Pope Francis keeps proclaiming. The violence, the tensions between communities, the challenges of racism, the worries also of those who protect us in police and security forces, these are indeed realistic issues and problems. The political scene can best be described right now as unsettling. Questions about religious liberty, both abroad and here, are looming in the months and years to come. Amidst these vicissitudes, the source of credibility for our foundations, the ballast for making our way through some sensitive socially troubled waters, is the Gospel preached and lived by all members of the Church. We become a source by way of “plugging into” the real source, Jesus Christ. When we see so many diverse groups, of every chronological age, culture, race and tongue, gathered together in one Faith by the Lord for formation, prayer and really good fun, we cannot help but be encouraged by and in our Catholic Faith.
Together with the priests, the permanent deacons, the consecrated women religious, the various religious movements and our pastoral ministers, I want to thank you, the members of Christ’s Body in Galveston-Houston for your witness to the Gospel: at church, in your homes and in the public square. This witness becomes a real act of boldness, conviction and assurance of the Holy Spirit working in our midst to bless the world.

Nuestro periódico católico Arquidiocesano publica un solo tema en agosto. Tiende a ser a la vez un repaso del verano y una visión de las muchas actividades para el otoño, especialmente en nuestras escuelas. Quiero usar mi columna más como un resumen porque tuve el privilegio de tomar parte en muchos eventos estupendos en nuestra Iglesia este verano, algunos de los cuales me gustaría compartir con ustedes. Estos eventos me han ayudado a tener algo de balance en estos últimos meses llenos de acontecimientos inquietantes y violencia en todo el mundo y en nuestro país. Los magníficos eventos que pasan aquí hacen que no perdamos nuestra alegría y el valor del Evangelio.
En julio, la Asociación Nacional de Músicos Pastorales celebró su convención anual aquí en Houston por primera vez y se unió a la Unidad de explosión, un encuentro de músicos litúrgicos de la Región X (el sudoeste) de ascendencia afroamericana. El resultado fue una maravillosa exhibición de la música multiétnica y multicultural, un gran número de talleres y vitrinas, de conciertos y un intenso entrenamiento en habilidades para músicos, cantores, coros, directores de música e instrumentistas. Desde el Centro de Convenciones y del Hotel Hilton miles de músicos se reunieron y se dispersaron a las iglesias y otros lugares para escuchar, actuar y celebrar. Nuestra propio Coro Arquidiócesano tocó el exquisito Duruflé Réquiem, un clásico del siglo 20, y lo hizo con un esmero y precisión que se ganó una gran admiración. Cada forma de música fue celebrada y analizada desde cantos a himnos barrocos, desde la música litúrgica de Asia hasta salmodia y marcos para la Misa al estilo Gospel. La riqueza de estilos fue acompañada de hospitalidad tejana, comentado por casi todos los que vinieron! Fue una genuina semana orientada a mejorar las técnicas y música, de inspirarse para hacer música hermosa, y de ser desafiados a reconocer e incorporar las riquezas de tantas culturas que existen en el pueblo católico de los Estados Unidos. Tuve el privilegio de ser el Principal Celebrante de una Liturgia Eucarística muy conmovedora el jueves por la noche orando por la unidad de la Iglesia representada en tantos colores distintivos de nuestro patrimonio litúrgico, pasado y presente. Creo que muchas de nuestras iglesias en el estado de Texas contribuyeron en gran medida al éxito de esta reunión y se vieron enriquecidas por otros. El timbre de la voz cantando en la Liturgia es uno de nuestros grandes impulsos de esperanza ya que la gracia de Cristo se da libremente en los sacramentos y nos mueve a responder con gratitud y gracia, la mejor "definición" de la música en la Liturgia. Mi agradecimiento a tantos por hacer posible esta ocasión de esperanza!
Durante julio nuestra Oficina de Jóvenes Adultos y Pastoral Universitaria continuó su Café Católica anual de verano, fue un lunes de oración por la noche, con oradores y discusión que tiene lugar en una de nuestras parroquias. Este año fue en San Vicente de Paul. El lunes por la noche que vine para la Misa, cena y discusión, estuvieron presentes casi 1.000 jóvenes adultos. Este año, las tres semanas fueron dedicadas al Año de la Misericordia y a los múltiples significados de encontrarse con la misericordia de Dios y cómo Jesús también nos busca. Disfruté totalmente el encuentro, las preguntas, algunas de las cuales fueron difíciles y favorables para discusión; también la solidaridad y seriedad de la fe de estos jóvenes adultos. Ellos son para mí la levadura y el fermento ya que son los que trabajan o estudian con otros adultos que están alejados de la fe o de la Iglesia o que tienen curiosidad de nosotros, pero no se atreven a acercarse a la Iglesia. Estos jóvenes adultos son la Iglesia en su testimonio, sus preguntas y su espíritu de compromiso. Cada año me dejan impresionado con estas sesiones que me dan mucho que pensar y me permiten como pastor acompañar a los adultos en su formación de su fe y de sus desafíos al vivir el Evangelio.
A finales de julio, por medio del gran trabajo de la Oficina de Catequesis y Evangelización del Adolescente ,el personal, el Consejo Juvenil y otros líderes jóvenes, tanto locales como nacionales, celebraron la conferencia juvenil anual. Cerca de 3.000 adolescentes y sus líderes juveniles y acompañantes se reunieron en el Centro de Convenciones y el Hotel Hilton y otros lugares y volcaron su energía en hacer tiempo para formación, escucha y discusión; momentos de oración y contemplación, y horas de gran diversión y amistades renovadas en El Señor. Tuve el privilegio de ayudar a celebrar el Sacramento de la Reconciliación ese sábado junto con muchos otros sacerdotes y ser el Celebrante Principal en la Liturgia Eucarística y en la repartición de los Premios Juveniles el domingo por la mañana. El tema del evento fue "Bienaventurados", como en "Bienaventurados los misericordiosos", un tema que enlazó la conferencia al Año de la Misericordia. Los oradores principales fueron sustanciales en el contenido que dieron acerca de la fe católica y los jóvenes estuvieron serios y al mismo tiempo divertidos, con una energía que te cansa con solo observarlos. Fue una hermosa Tarde de Oración y Exposición del Santísimo el sábado; la reverencia y el silencio de tantos jóvenes fueron palpables y fue una fuente increíble de belleza. Los desafíos que enfrentan nuestros adolescentes viviendo y entendiendo su fe hoy son enormes y casi interminables. Pero la audacia de la fe que vi en estos chicos y chicas también fue formidable. El fin de semana me aportó todavía otro ejemplo de mucho bien y de mucha seriedad de propósito de tantos miembros de la Iglesia aquí en Galveston-Houston.
Cielo Abierto es una Hora Santa Musical y una oportunidad de enseñanza y oración ante el Santísimo Sacramento para los miembros de nuestras diversas comunidades hispanas. Participé en la última noche en el Centro Carismático Católico y había miles de personas presentes con sus familias. También es una especie de celebración de música de alabanza y adoración en el idioma hispano. El fervor y espíritu de oración de la asamblea fueron igualados por la exuberancia y la intensidad de la música. Este evento ayuda a consolidar el fervor emocional con contenido católico, un factor que es importante para el siempre creciente número de personas que vienen aquí de todos los lugares de México, América Central, América del Sur y más allá.
Tuve el placer de conocer un buen número de hombres y mujeres en un retiro de fin de semana de discernimiento para la vida consagrada y el sacerdocio. Es un placer hablar con los adultos que dan seria consideración a la llamada del Señor y a donde podría conducirlos el dar una respuesta a su compromiso bautismal. La Misa y el almuerzo con ellos fueron los grandes momentos de ese domingo. Además, me reuní con nuestros más de 50 seminaristas la semana pasada, -13 de ellos nuevos-, para hablar, tener una sesión de preguntas y respuestas y celebrar la Liturgia juntos al final de su convocatoria especial antes de que volvieran a sus seminarios para el semestre de Otoño. Me encantó ver y estar con nuestros seminaristas. Les pido que continúen sus oraciones para que perseveren en su formación y, si es la voluntad de Dios, que lleguen al sacerdocio sirviendo en esta Arquidiócesis. Soy testigo del compromiso de estos jóvenes, de su solidaridad entre ellos, y de su verdadero deseo de servir a esta iglesia local. Que Dios los bendiga!
El 5 de agosto la Co-Catedral del Sagrado Corazón se llenó hasta el borde con la Misa de Inicio del Ciclo Escolar para directores, administradores, personal y maestros de nuestras escuelas católicas. Se distribuyeron premios para los maestros después de la Misa. Como era día de fiesta para la Virgen María, aproveché la ocasión de leer el Evangelio de la Visitación de María a Isabel señalando en la homilía las cualidades de la contemplación, la hospitalidad y la acción en la vida de María. Estos son caracteres importantes para todos los involucrados en la educación y formación de nuestros niños y jóvenes en las escuelas católicas. La importancia de la belleza y la imaginación religiosa no pueden ser descuidadas en la educación de la persona! Quiero saludar a nuestra Oficina de Escuelas, a nuestros directores y muy especialmente a todos los maestros que aportan un verdadero compromiso lleno de esperanza a sus deberes y sus actividades.
Hubo muchos otros eventos, como el Desayuno de Oración en julio, el Día de Recogimiento patrocinado por el movimiento de HECHOS y otras celebraciones que salpicaron el paisaje de verano en la Arquidiócesis. He recordado una serie de eventos para animarlos --como me han animado a mí--que los retos que enfrentamos tienen una resolución y solución - ustedes! Es decir, somos, por la gracia de Dios, un pueblo llena de esperanza, comprometidos en la causa del Evangelio y de la misericordia, con la reconciliación que el Papa Francisco sigue proclamando. La violencia, las tensiones entre comunidades, los problemas de racismo, las preocupaciones de aquellos que nos protegen con las fuerzas policiales y de seguridad, estos son de hecho cuestiones y problemas reales. La escena política se puede describir muy inquietante en este momento. En los meses y años venideros se vislumbran preguntas sobre la libertad religiosa tanto en el extranjero como aquí. En medio de estas vicisitudes, la fuente de credibilidad de nuestros cimientos, la fuerza para abrir camino a través de algunas aguas socialmente turbulentas y sensibles es el Evangelio predicado y vivido por todos los miembros de la Iglesia. Nos convertimos en medio de "conexión" con la verdadera fuente que es Jesucristo. Cuando vemos a tantos grupos diversos, de toda edad cronológica, cultura, raza y lengua, reunidos en una sola fe por el Señor para formación, oración y diversión, no podemos más que animarnos por medio de nuestra fe católica.
Junto con los sacerdotes, los diáconos permanentes, las religiosas consagradas, los diversos movimientos religiosos y nuestros agentes de pastoral, quiero darles las gracias a ustedes, miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo en Galveston-Houston por su testimonio al Evangelio: en la iglesia, en sus hogares y en las plazas públicas. Este testimonio se convierte en un verdadero acto de valentía, convicción y seguridad en el Espíritu Santo que actúa en medio de nosotros para bendecir al mundo.
