The oldest international collection for the Catholic Church is the Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land; it is the only offering that the Holy Father asks of Catholics worldwide on one given day. This offering dates back hundreds of years.
I am writing this column a week before you receive the Texas Catholic Herald. As this time, the Holy Father has already come to Mexico to begin his pilgrimage of faith to that important country, a place dear to the many parishioners in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston who are from Mexico.
The Season of Lent arrives early in 2016. Ash Wednesday is February 10. Easter Sunday is March 27. Because this is the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has placed very special emphasis on the celebration of the forty days leading to Easter.
This past December, our Holy Father inaugurated the Year of Mercy, a Jubilee Year for which there are many dimensions. There are re-discoveries of the face of God, a face turned towards all humanity in Jesus Christ, a face of mercy and faithfulness.
We just celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord and the conclusion of the Christmas Season. I want to extend to all of you who sent cards and greetings, gifts and best wishes to me for Christmas a very sincere thanks.
