A Shepherd's Message - Sept. 13, 2016

On Monday, Sept. 5, I presided at a celebration at our Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart for the Feast Day of St. Teresa of Calcutta, canonized by Pope Francis the day before, Sunday, Sept. 4. Her sisters, the Missionaries of Charity, resident in Houston, were present as were many priests and more than 2,000 members of the faithful. Mother Teresa draws a large crowd, rightfully so. She was and is a tremendous witness to the greatness of God’s mercy and to concrete acts of charity. No wonder she is so highly venerated by peoples all over the world, Christian and non-Christian.
During his homily at the canonization Mass Pope Francis spoke about two protagonists in history: God and man. Our role, our call and our task is to hear the call of God and then do His will. What is pleasing to God? In the words of the Prophet Hosea, what is pleasing to the Lord is “I want mercy and not sacrifice.” God is pleased with the concrete acts of mercy, with a repertoire of mercy.
We profess our belief in Jesus Christ and we pray to Him and send up our love. Pope Francis said that this faith and prayer needs a translation! The translation is acts of charity, giving Jesus something to eat and drink by giving them to His disguises! This is a serious endeavor, but it is also an endeavor of great joy!
The Holy Father praised St. Teresa as “a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded. She was committed to defending life, ceaselessly proclaiming that ‘the unborn are the weakest, the smallest, the most vulnerable.’” She also bowed down and ministered to all abandoned, those left on the side of the road, and saw in them the great God-given dignity that was theirs but had been forgotten by others. As she became more well-known, she never lost this salt and light; she was unafraid to speak before the powers of this world, whether in government, finance or industry. She accosted them for their share in creating the poverty that emptied so many people of their dignity and rights.
Pope Francis sees in St. Teresa of Calcutta the great patron saint of all those who volunteer on behalf of people in need. He sees her as a model of holiness, a model that is close at hand, easy to understand, and very inviting. She was enabled to embody, by God’s grace, the one major criterion for action: gratuitous love! She was free of any ideology and she was receptive to all languages and races and cultures.
Throughout the world today many people, rich and poor, religious or skeptical stand in need of an understanding heart and an outreach of tenderness. There are too many on the peripheries of love. St. Teresa of Calcutta is so loved because she realized this phenomenon, and with the simple, but radical, commitment to the Gospel of love, of joy and of mercy, did something about it! May the number of her followers increase.
This column also gives me the opportunity to thank the Missionaries of Charity for their presence in our local Church, and their beautiful witness and ‘smile’ among us. I also want to thank the wide variety of religious communities of women in consecrated life who labor quietly and unceasingly for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to take root in our Archdiocese.
We ask the prayers of the Mother of God upon all the women religious of Galveston-Houston. St. Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!
El lunes 5 de septiembre, presidí una celebración en nuestra Co-Catedral del Sagrado Corazón con motivo de la Fiesta de Santa Teresa de Calcuta, canonizada por el Papa Francisco el día anterior, domingo, 4 de septiembre. Sus hermanas, las Misioneras de la Caridad, residentes en Houston, estuvieron presentes al igual que muchos sacerdotes y más de 2.000 fieles. La Madre Teresa atrae a una gran multitud, con mucha razón. Ella fue y sigue siendo un gran testimonio de la grandeza de la misericordia de Dios y de las obras concretas de caridad. No es de extrañar que ella sea tan altamente venerada por los pueblos de todo el mundo, cristianos y no cristianos.
Durante la homilía de la Misa de la canonización el Papa Francisco habló sobre dos protagonistas de la historia: Dios y el hombre. Nuestro papel, nuestro llamado y nuestra tarea es escuchar la llamada de Dios y luego hacer su voluntad. ¿Qué es agradable a Dios? En las palabras del Profeta Oseas, lo que agrada al Señor es "Misericordia quiero y no sacrificio." Dios está satisfecho con obras concretas de misericordia.
Profesamos nuestra creencia en Jesucristo y le rezamos y le enviamos nuestro amor. El Papa Francisco dijo que esta fe y esta oración necesitan una traducción! La traducción es obras de caridad, dando a Jesús algo de comer y beber, dándoselo a los que en ellos se oculta! Este es un esfuerzo serio, pero también es un esfuerzo de gran alegría!
El Santo Padre alabó a Santa Teresa como "una generosa dispensadora de la misericordia divina”, haciéndose disponible para todos por medio de su acogida y en defensa de la vida humana, de los no nacidos y de los abandonados y rechazados. Ella se comprometió a defender la vida, sin cesar, proclamando que "los no nacidos son los más débiles, los más pequeños, los más vulnerables". También se inclinó a servir a todos los abandonados, a esos quedados en la orilla del camino, y vio en ellos la gran dignidad que Dios da a cada persona y que los demás habían olvidado. A medida que se hizo más conocida, nunca perdió esta sal y luz; ella no tuvo miedo hablar ante los poderes de este mundo, ya fuera en el gobierno, las finanzas o la industria. Ella les hizo ver su parte en crear la pobreza que despojó a tanta gente de su dignidad y de sus derechos.
El Papa Francisco ve en Santa Teresa de Calcuta a la gran santa patrona de todos aquellos que trabajan como voluntarios en nombre de las personas necesitadas. La ve como un modelo de santidad, un modelo que está a la mano, fácil de entender, y de imitar. Ella pudo encarnar, por la gracia de Dios, el único criterio importante para la acción: el amor gratuito! Ella fue libre de cualquier ideología y fue receptiva a todas las lenguas, razas y culturas.
En todo el mundo hoy en día muchas personas, ricas y pobres, religiosas o escépticas tienen necesidad de un corazón comprensivo y de una muestra de ternura. Hay demasiados en las periferias del amor. Santa Teresa de Calcuta es tan amada porque ella realizó este fenómeno y con el simple, pero radical compromiso con el Evangelio del amor, de la alegría y de la misericordia, hizo algo al respecto! Que aumente el número de sus seguidores.
Esta columna también me da la oportunidad de agradecer a las Misioneras de la Caridad por su presencia en nuestra Iglesia local, y su hermoso testimonio y 'sonrisa' entre nosotros. También quiero dar las gracias a la gran variedad de comunidades religiosas de mujeres en la vida consagrada que trabajan en silencio y sin cesar para que el Evangelio de Jesucristo eche raíces en nuestra Arquidiócesis.
