Catholic Campaign for Human Development

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic bishops. Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through the promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations, and through transformative justice education.

The CCHD Process

The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development seeks to:

Educate parishioners about poverty in the Houston Metropolitan area and the U.S. to equip them to work for change.
Fund groups in the Archdiocese who are working to end poverty. Funding comes from the donations parishioners make to the CCHD collection which takes place at parishes the weekend before Thanksgiving each year. Learn more about "Truth about CCHD".

CCHD operates out of the office of the Secretariat for Social Concerns. The CCHD committee participates in the evaluation of grant applications and visits Grantees to monitor projects.

CCHD Grant Guidelines

Summary of criteria and guidelines for CCHD funding:

Projects must benefit a poverty group, with at least 50 percent of those benefiting from the project coming from the low-income community.
Members of the poverty group must have a dominant voice in the project.
CCHD-funded projects must conform to the moral teachings of the Catholic Church.
Projects should innovatively address the basic causes of poverty and effect institutional change.
Projects should generally contribute to a more integrated and mutually understanding society.

Gulf Coast Leadership Council

GCLC's mission is to develop leaders in institutions who act on their faith and democratic values in the public sphere. GCLC is a member of the Texas Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), a network of community-based organizations in 12 Texas cities that work together on statewide issues. GCLC was formed to give a voice to people who are usually not included in the major decisions affecting their lives. The approach of GCLC, however, is not to advocate on behalf of citizens, but to train people to advocate for themselves.

Justice Forward breaks the cycle of incarceration and funds essential programs for individuals in the Harris County Specialty Courts to help them become independent and productive members of our community.

Living Hope Wheelchair Association

Our Mission is to affirm the dignity and improve the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities and their families; particularly those who use a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury or disease, as well as immigrants and refugees. We work at the intersection of the rights of people with disabilities, health justice, and the rights of vulnerable people and workers, providing medical supplies and equipment, as well as spaces for leadership development and a community where everyone can feel included, respected, and loved.

The Corporation's mission is to provide a safe space for low-wage workers to gather and learn about their rights in the workplace, a network for various social services, file complaints with government agencies, meet with attorneys, and connect with community allies. The Corporation also organizes low-wage workers to improve conditions on the job and mobilizes workers and the general and religious communities on issues and campaigns to improve wages, benefits, and working conditions for low-wage workers.
