Catholic Bioethics

This is a three module series that focuses on common medical and ethical issues arising at the beginning of life, at the end of life, and in health care.

Module 1: Beginning of Life Issues has three sessions.

  • Session 1 Topics: Marriage, Contraception, and Reproductive Technologies
  • Session 2 Topics: Nature of the Human Person, Moral Decision-making, and Embryology
  • Session 3 Topics: Stem Cell Research, Genetic Engineering, and Surrogacy Agreements 

Module 1 will be offered at:

Module 2: End of Life Issues 

  • Session Topics: Dignity and Illness, Euthanasia and assisted suicide, Advanced directives and end-of-life decision-making.

 Module 3: Health Care and Ethics

  • Session 1 Topics: Catholic Perspectives on the healthcare professional-patient relationship as partnership, ethical cooperation in a modern healthcare setting (case study on ethics of vaccine use), and principles of totality and integrity in determining ethical treatment (case study on sterilization)
  • Session 2 Topics: Stem cell and embryonic research, therapeutic vs. non-therapeutic experiments, and issues of consent and proxy consent
  • Session 3 Topics: Ethical issues in organ donation, living vs. deceased donor gift, definitions of/determination of death, and assisted suicide: implications for organ donation.
