"Live" Marriage Prep Programs Slowly Returning... Parish based prep recommended
"Live" Marriage Preparation programs, halted since mid-March, are beginning to make a comeback but with a much reduced capacity. Catholic Engaged Encounter Weekend, normally a residential retreat with 32 couples can only accomodate 8 couples per retreat.
The June Catholic Engaged Encounter will be held as a commuter retreat at a larger alternate location that can accomodate the already registered couples. No decisions have been made yet in regards to the location for the June Catholic Engaged Encounter Weekend, but we will soon be contacting those couples with information.
Since group gatherings are going to continue to be challenging for the next month or two, we recommend engaged couples who have access to parish based marriage preparation sponsor couples, to consider doing marriage preparation that way. Marriage preparation sponsor couples are a wonderful way to prepare and can have virtual meetings with their engaged couples if necessary. Please check with your clergy to find out if your parish has trained sponsor couples.
If you are recently engaged and have not contacted your parish about marriage preparation, please contact your parish. Most parishes have personnel working in their offices, even if part time.
If you are clergy or a lay marriage preparation minister, additional information is available for you in the Education and Formation section of the Family Life Ministry website.
Civil Aspect of Marriage a Challenge for Even Small Church Ceremonies
The Harris County Clerks Office, which issues marriage licences, is now seeing couples for marriage liceses, but is doing so by appoitment only and as of May 27, their earliest appoitment is in July. What does that mean if you planned on having a small church ceremony in the next few weeks? It means you have to get creative.
Marriage licenses issued by any county in Texas are valid in any county in Texas. If you live in Harris County, check neighboring counties to find out if they are open. For example, Galveston County is back in business with both their Galveston Island office and their annex office in League City, now open and issuing marriage licenses. Call the county clerk's office in your neighboring county if your's is presently closed.
Some things to keep in mind when it comes to marriage licenses:
1. A marriage license is good for 90 days
2. A marriage license cannot be used for the first 72 hrs after issuance
3. The 72-hour waiting period is waived for couples who have taken a state approved marriage education course through the TwoGether in Texas Program. A parish and their program has to be registered with TwoGether in Texas to issue TwoGether in Texas certificates. The archdiocesan Family Life Office is registered and has several programs registered.
