HOUSTON — The Ordination of Transitional Deacons, held Saturday, May 14, at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, brought three men a step closer to the priesthood.

Michael Applegate, Michael McFall and Truong Son Cao Nguyen were ordained to the Sacred Order of Diaconate through the imposition of hands and the invocation of the Holy Spirit by Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A. Fiorenza.

Their ordination as transitional deacons is one of their final steps before being ordained to the priesthood.

Deacon Applegate considers his home parish to be St. Martha Catholic Church in Kingwood. He was born and raised in Hobbs, N.M. and lived in Tulsa, Okla., before residing in Kingwood the last 15 years.

Deacon McFall grew up in Jasper, Texas, raised on a farm where we grow vegetables and raise cattle and honeybees. After graduating from college, he said he spent 6 months volunteering in Honduras working at an orphanage with the Franciscan Friars. There, he felt drawn to the priesthood, which led him into becoming a seminarian when he returned back to Houston. His home parish is St. Theresa Catholic Church in Sugar Land.

Deacon Nguyen considers St. Christopher Catholic Church his home parish. Born in Bien Hoa, Vietnam, his family moved to America when he was four-years-old and encouraged him to live a religious life.
