Steps for Students prepares for tenth anniversary run

September 9, 2014

HOUSTON — Online registration is open for the tenth annual Steps for Students, set for Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, in downtown Houston near the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

The event begins with a Mass at 6:30 a.m. at the Co-Cathedral, located at 1111 St. Joseph Pkwy. The chip-timed 5K starts at 8 a.m. and the David K. Guite Memorial 1k Family Fun Run begins at 9 a.m.

Presented by Yellow Cab and Taxis Fiesta, Steps for Students is an Archdiocese-wide race where runners, walkers and supporters of Catholic education for the all school and parish communities come together to raise awareness and funds for Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

Funds raised by underwriting and corporate sponsorship funds, as well as undesignated registrations and pledges, will support the Archdiocesan Tuition Assistance Program.

The Tuition Assistance Program is a yearly commitment that the Archdiocese makes to keep Catholic schools accessible, affordable and available to all families. There are currently 61 schools in the Archdiocese.

Last February, more than 9,100 participants ran or walked the 5K and the David K. Guite Memorial 1k. Along with families and friends cheering on, more than 10,000 people attended the event. The race was chip-timed for the first time ever and will be again in 2015.

In its inaugural year of 2006, David Kenneth Guite, principal of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School in Galena Park, was a founding member and driving spirit of the Steps of Students 5K Run Committee. After his tragic passing before the second race, Steps for Students honors his memory with the 1K race and the highest award offered to participants: The David K. Guite Spirit Award.

The USA Track and Field-sanctioned race helps raise awareness and funds for Catholic schools by:
- Giving all participants the opportunity to sign up to be on their school’s team and set up their own personal pledge collection page online to link to the Catholic school of their choice at

- Allowing participants to designate their pledges and registration fees to benefit the Catholic school of their choice.

All underwriting sponsorships, fees and pledges left undesignated by participants will directly benefit the Archdiocesan Tuition Assistance Program, which provides tuition assistance to students attending primary Catholic schools in the Archdiocese.

Online registration is already underway. To register, visit and click “Join Team” to designate the Catholic school of choice.
