Steppin’ it up for students

December 20, 2011

HOUSTON — Runners, walkers and supporters of Catholic education are gearing up for the seventh annual Steps for Students 5K Run on Feb. 18, 2012 at Robertson Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston. Since the inaugural Steps for Students in 2006, participants and sponsors from across the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston have stepped up year after year to show their support for Catholic schools.

Steps for Students is an annual Archdiocesan event in which all school and parish communities come together to support Catholic education. The goal of Steps for Students is to raise awareness of the importance of a Catholic education and provide resources for Catholic schools.

One school that has already gone the extra mile is Our Lady Queen of Peace in Richwood.

Our Lady Queen of Peace is approximately 55 miles south of downtown Houston and in the past “it has been difficult for our school to participate in Steps for Students because of the distance,” said Jessica Effenberger, Development Director for Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School. “[But now] the online fundraising option and new website make it much easier for our school to take part in the event.”

The school also has a fundraising page on the FirstGiving website, www.firstgiving.com/stepsforstudents to raise money for Steps and for their school.

“We hope to do a push in January and February emphasizing the tuition assistance need of Catholic school families and hopefully gain more participation that way,” said Effenberger.
