Catholic Schools Spotlight: St. Mary Catholic School, League City

March 13, 2012

LEAGUE CITY — St. Mary Catholic School, founded in 1978, began as a small early elementary Montessori school and now employs 18 full-time certified teachers totaling more than 210 years of experience within the classroom.
There are 214 students registered at the school with an average class size of 14 students. St. Mary's offers early childhood, elementary and middle school programs.

"St. Mary's teachers work with their students to promote success academically within community service and faith formation," said Lydia Mondragon, M.Ed., who joined the faculty as principal for the 2011-2012 academic year. "Students, parents and staff work together to build students' knowledge, faith and sense of community service."

The co-ed campus offers opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular activities such as digital photography, band, choir, yearbook, chess and environmental explorers. St. Mary's also hosts a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.

Students have the opportunity to play on athletic teams including soccer, volleyball, basketball and track. The school mascot is the Bobcat.
Community service is a focal point of student experiences at St. Mary. Students enrolled in fourth through eighth grade are required to participate within community service activities. Students have worked together to organize food and clothing drives, care bags for teens in need, crochet caps for premature babies and participate in local events such as the Beach Bash Clean-up to serve the surrounding community.

"It is the goal of St. Mary School to prepare its students to be productive members of society, to be living examples of the Christian truths and values that are taught, to be able to respond to the needs of the community and to have a global perspective of the needs of our earth," Mondragon said. †
