Cardinal DiNardo recognizes kids art, writing contest winners

HOUSTON — Daniel Cardinal DiNardo recognized winners of the Archdiocesan Children’s Year of Mercy Art and Writing Contest at a gathering May 26 at the Downtown Chancery.
Catholic School students from across the Archdiocese were invited to participate in the contest by submitting an art entry — sketch, watercolor, crayon, paint, sculpture and video/multi-media — or a written entry, each focused on the Spiritual and Corporal work of mercy.
Hosted by the Archdiocesan Office of Evangelization and Cathechesis, three divisions included pre-kindergarten to kindergarden, first through third and fourth through sixth. Here are the winners:
Pre-kindergarten through kindergarten
Art - First place, Leena Razook, St. Michael; Second place: Paulina Karaszewski, St. Jerome; Essay - First place, Kingsley Redd, St. Michael; Second place: Caroline Redd, St. Michael.
First through third grade
Art - First place, Ava Powell, St. Michael; Second place, Leslie Garcia, St. Paul; Third place, Judith Ortiz, St. Cecilia; Essay - First place, Eliza Piorun, True Cross; Second place, Lamees Razook, St. Michael, Third place, Isabella Karaszewski, St. Jerome.
Fourth through sixth grade
Art - First place, Gianna Fernandes, St. Faustina; Second place, Mia Brumlow, True Cross; Third place-tie, Natalie Marklund, St. Michael and Miriam Ghaly, St. Clare; Essay - First place, Liana McLane, St. Cecilia; Second place-tie, Maria Barsallo, True Cross and Annie Hancock, St. Clare.
