Tune in for arrival of 11-ton pipe organ at downtown Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart

The Jan. 18 arrival of 5,499 pipes at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart will be music to the ears of Catholic faithful in Houston.

The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston's Co-Cathedral will receive a late Christmas present on Monday, Jan. 18, when a new, custom-made pipe organ arrives in pieces and work on its installation begins in the church's choir loft.

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo will bless the organ pipes and the workers who will fashion the instrument together at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 18.

The parts for the 45-foot-tall organ – which is comprised of 11 tons of tin and lead – are being transported in two semi-trucks from the organ builder's studio in Roy, Washington to the Co-Cathedral. The pipe organ is expected to be fully installed by October 2010.
