Statement on the death of Archbishop Patrick Flores, emeritus archbishop of San Antonio

January 10, 2017

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston send their condolences and prayers to the Archdiocese of San Antonio on the passing of Archbishop Patricio Flores.

Archbishop Flores was a product of the St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston and a faithful priest-servant in the local Diocese before being appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 1970. Eight years later, he was installed as bishop of the Diocese of El Paso where he served for 15 months before the pontiff named him Archbishop of San Antonio. Archbishop Flores’ legacy in social justice, along with his pastoral presence and generous spirit, continues to resonate.

Archbishop Flores was the first Hispanic bishop appointed in this country since the time of the early missionaries. He was a pioneer, a leader and an advocate for the country’s Hispanic immigrants and the poor.

May his soul rest in peace. Eternal life granted unto him, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon him.By Office of Communications
