Newly named Cardinal to speak in Houston tonight
Cardinal-designate Wuerl, mentor and former bishop to Cardinal DiNardo, delivering keynote at UST
HOUSTON – Washington's Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, one of the 24 cardinals named to the College of Cardinals this morning by Pope Benedict XVI, will deliver the keynote address for the Center for Faith and Culture at the University of St. Thomas at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 20. He will speak on the topic of "Religious Faith's Role in Building a Good and Just Society."
Daniel Cardinal DiNardo of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, where Cardinal-designate Wuerl was formerly the bishop. Cardinal-designate Wuerl appointed Cardinal DiNardo to a number of posts in the Pittsburgh diocese before Cardinal DiNardo was ordained a bishop for the Diocese of Sioux City and then the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
"Archbishop Wuerl was my bishop in Pittsburgh for 18 years and I know him to be a deeply faith-filled man and a superb catechist," Cardinal DiNardo said. "His pastoral work in the Archdiocese of Washington has been excellent. He has a wonderful gift for synthesizing various dimensions of the faith. I am delighted that the Holy Father has elevated him to the College of Cardinals."
In a separate news release today, Cardinal-designate Wuerl said, "This truly is an honor for the Archdiocese of Washington, the Church in the nation's capital, and for all of the clergy, religious and parishioners of this local Church who every day live out their faith in commitment and deep love for Christ. I am humbled by our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI's trust in me as shepherd of this flock and pledge to him my renewed fidelity, affection and loyalty."
WHAT: Cardinal-designate Donald Wuerl of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. and Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will make brief comments to the media regarding this morning's announcement by Pope Benedict XVI naming 24 new cardinals, including Cardinal-designate Wuerl.

THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS: At 7:30 p.m. in the in the Chapel of St. Basil on the University of St. Thomas campus, 3802 Yoakum, Cardinal-designate Wuerl will deliver the inaugural lecture for the UST Center for Faith and Culture Master of Arts in Faith and Culture Program. A live video will be shown in Anderson Hall if guests exceed the capacity of the Chapel.
