Festive celebration for Our Lady of Guadalupe set for downtown Houston Dec. 8

Colorfully costumed dancers and music highlight the annual Archdiocesan Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe set for Sunday, Dec. 8 in downtown Houston. Up to 1,000 Danzantes and Matachines (indigenous folk dancers), wearing elaborate headpieces and traditional Aztec-style dress, will process from 1700 San Jacinto St. to the George R. Brown (GRB) Convention Center.

Statement from Archdiocese re: Auxiliary Bishop Sheltz

In late June, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston received an allegation of abuse against Most Reverend George A. Sheltz, our Auxiliary Bishop and Chancellor. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has determined that the allegation against Bishop Sheltz is manifestly unfounded. Bishop Sheltz is now restored to full public ministry.

St. Mary Cathedral Basilica statue removed temporarily for restoration

The St. Mary, Star of the Sea statue atop St. Mary Cathedral Basilica (2011 Church St., Galveston, Texas 77550) was temporarily removed Sept. 24 from the church building structure for restoration and is available for public visitation.

Annual Firefighter Mass honors firefighters lost in line of duty

Every day, firefighters dedicate themselves to protecting the lives of residents and their property. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will thank and pray for all firefighters from area departments and volunteers at the Annual Archdiocesan Firefighter Mass set for 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 13.

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo will celebrate the Blue Mass on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart to recognize all law enforcement, criminal justice personnel, support staff and their families.
