Easter Sunday Mass marks the re-opening of St. Mary Cathedral Basilica

It’s been a long journey, but at noon this Sunday, April 20, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo will celebrate an Easter Sunday Mass marking the re-opening St. Mary Cathedral Basilica – the “Mother Church of Texas.” The historic church has been closed since September 2008 after sustaining significant damage during Hurricane Ike.

Catholics Mark the Beginning of Lent with Ashes (1)

Catholics will mark the onset of Lent with Ash Wednesday on March 5. Throughout the day, hundreds of thousands will attend Masses and Services and receive ashes across their foreheads in a ceremony known as the “imposition” of ashes. The ashes symbolize penance and are a reminder of our mortality.

Extraordinary combination of art and Scripture comes to Houston

It’s been called one of the most extraordinary undertakings of our time and at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, people in the Houston-Galveston area will have the rare opportunity to see a magnificent piece of art and Scripture at a special introduction to the Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible. Catholic Schools celebrate Catholic education in unique ways

With a theme of “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service,” the 60 schools of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston are celebrating National Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 26 – Feb. 1, 2014. Instituted by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), the week is dedicated to celebrating faith and the exceptional standards of Catholic schools, as well as their achievements and communities.

This weekend the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will take time to reflect upon and remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at its 29th Annual Mass of Remembrance. The Mass will be Sunday, January 19, at 3:00 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1111 St. Joseph Pkwy., Houston.

Houston-area Charities Come Together for Poverty Awareness Month

Three Houston-area organizations are banding together for Poverty Awareness Month this coming January. Catholic Charities, San José Clinic, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, with underwriting support from The Kristie Lee Tautenhahn Foundation, are promoting Poverty Awareness throughout the month with a variety of educational tools and resources, including a Mass on Saturday, January 11th, 2014.

Thousands of Houston-Galveston Area Vietnamese Catholics gather to celebrate Christmas

On Christmas Eve, several thousand Vietnamese Catholics from around the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will join together to celebrate the birth of Christ at the annual Vietnamese Christmas Vigil Mass. The Mass will begin at 6 p.m. at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston.

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo marks the end of the Year of Faith

On Saturday, Nov. 23, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo and Catholics from across the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will gather for a Mass honoring the conclusion of the Year of Faith. The Mass will be held at 5 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1111 St. Joseph Pkwy.
