World Day of Prayer for Grandparents and the Elderly

This Sunday, July 25th, 2021, the Church observes the first-ever World Day of Prayer for Grandparents and the Elderly.
Among the great number of cultures that make up the Church in Galveston-Houston there are many customs by which we show honor toward our elders. These expressions of respect demonstrate our reverence for the gift of human life, and for the wisdom that comes with age.
Just as the Lord Jesus multiplies the meager loaves and fishes into an abundance of food for the hungry crowd in this weekend’s gospel, so too does our joy increase when younger generations encounter their elders in the warmth of family life.
I encourage our youth and parents of young children to make a special effort in the coming days to reach out to grandparents and other elders with a phone call or a visit. For many, old age may be a time of loneliness. The kindness we show to the elderly and the homebound is an act of mercy and gospel joy that the Lord will always remember.
Please join me this weekend in offering thanks to God for the lives of grandparents and the elderly throughout this local Church.
Jornada Mundial de Oración por los Abuelos y las Personas Mayores
Este domingo 25 de julio de 2021, la Iglesia celebra la primera Jornada Mundial de Oración por los Abuelos y las Personas Mayores.
Entre la gran cantidad de culturas que componen la Iglesia en Galveston-Houston, hay muchas costumbres por las que mostramos honor a nuestros mayores. Estas expresiones de respeto demuestran nuestra reverencia por el don de la vida humana y por la sabiduría que viene con la edad.
Así como nuestro Señor Jesucristo multiplica los panes y peces en una abundancia de alimento para la multitud hambrienta en el evangelio de este fin de semana, así mismo aumenta nuestro gozo cuando las nuevas generaciones acogen a sus mayores en el calor de la vida familiar.
Invito a nuestros jóvenes y padres de niños pequeños a hacer un esfuerzo especial en los próximos días para contactar a los abuelos y a otras personas mayores ya sea con una llamada telefónica o una visita. Para muchos, la vejez puede ser una época de soledad. La bondad que mostremos a las personas mayores y a aquellos confinados a casa es un acto de misericordia y gozo del evangelio que el Señor siempre recordará.
Por favor acompáñenme este fin de semana dando gracias a Dios por las vidas de los abuelos y de las personas mayores de esta Iglesia local.
