Statement RE. Federal Judge Ruling on Texas' Definition of Marriage

February 27, 2014

“I am disappointed in a federal judge’s ruling that the state’s definition of marriage as between one woman and one man is unconstitutional.

This is the very definition of marriage recognized for generations here and around the world. It is shared by the voters of this state who approved the amendment to the Texas constitution. It is shared across religious faiths and beyond.

The union of one man and one woman in a lifelong commitment open to having and raising children is uniquely complementary. It recognizes that both a mother and a father are indispensable as parents. It is part of the foundation of our very existence.

I hope and pray that this essential truth will continue to be respected and preserved.”
