Modern-day saint

January 14, 2011

Pope John Paul II was a renowned world leader and revered Shepherd of the Church. He epitomized the role of the successor of Saint Peter, "Strengthen the brothers." (Luke 22)

I still recall the days after his death when the millions who came to Rome called out "John Paul the Great" and "Santo subito," or "Saint immediately." The case for his canonization began rapidly and has reached the point that a miracle has been certified for his beatification.

I know I join with the Catholics of this Archdiocese in recognizing his heroic virtue, prayerfulness and his deep abiding Catholic faith. He was the champion of the pro-life cause throughout the world.

We were blessed to know him and are now blessed by his prayers for us, for the Church and for the world.
