Cardinal DiNardo's statement on the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI

Statement from Daniel Cardinal DiNardo:
First, I offer my apologies for the delay in issuing a statement and calling a news conference on the Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI from the papal office effective February 28 at 8:00 p.m. The reason was I was in transit from Rome to Houston yesterday and unaware of the announcement until I landed at 3:30 p.m. in Washington yesterday afternoon.
I am, like most others, surprised by the announcement and also a little saddened. At the same time, the Holy Father was very clear and precise on his reasons for resigning. They center on the very meaning of the Pope as governing the ship of St. Peter, the Church, and proclaiming the Gospel. These ministries involve strength of mind and body that, due to his advancing age, the Holy Father senses he can no longer fulfill with the vigor required in today's age of rapid changes and questions of great relevance to the Faith. The Pope's words speak of his great devotion and love for the Church, his wonderful humility, and his always generous leadership of the Church.
His papacy has been marked by wonderful encyclicals like Deus Caritas Est, many pilgrimages all over the world to visit and strengthen the faith of the local Churches, his great care for peace, for the poor and suffering, especially in developing countries, his great care for the Middle East, and his vision for a new evangelization and a deeper attachment to the person of Jesus Christ by all the clergy and faithful. He has been a genuine apostolic leader of the Faith and we are all grateful for his governance, his astute theological mind, and his great charity and visibility for the Catholic Church.
We pray for him and for all the Church as the Cardinals now prepare to elect his Successor in the weeks ahead. May the Holy Spirit guide those efforts and may the prayers of the Mother of God assist us all in being in genuine communion with the Lord, with Peter, and with all members of the Church.

En primer lugar, les ofrezco mis disculpas por el retraso en comunicar una declaración y llamar a una conferencia de prensa sobre la Renuncia del Papa Benedicto XVI al Pontificado a partir del 20 de febrero a las 8:00 pm. La razón es que ayer estaba en camino de Roma a Houston y no me había enterado del anuncio hasta que aterricé a las 3:30 pm ayer por la tarde en Washington.
Yo estoy, como muchos otros, sorprendido por el anuncio y también un poco triste. Al mismo tiempo, el Santo Padre fue muy claro y preciso sobre sus razones para renunciar. Se centran en el significado mismo del Papa como gobernante de la nave de San Pedro, la Iglesia, y la proclamación del Evangelio. Estos ministerios implican fuerza de la mente y el cuerpo que, debido a su avanzada edad, el Santo Padre intuye ya no poder cumplir con el vigor necesario en la era actual de cambios rápidos y cuestiones de gran relevancia para la fe.
