Cardinal DiNardo Remembering Cardinal Foley
December 12, 2011
Dear friends in Christ,
I am greatly saddened by the news of the death of John Cardinal Foley, Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. From 1984 to 2007, Cardinal Foley served as President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, a position in which he utilized his knowledge of modern communications to champion the Church’s messages in the world and nurture the Church’s relationship with the secular media. For 25 years, he narrated the news broadcast of the papal Midnight Mass at the Vatican. As the voice of the Holy See, Cardinal Foley was a friend and guide to many Catholics around the globe. He graciously agreed to be the television commentator for the dedication of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston’s new Co-Cathedral four years ago.
I had the privilege of living with Cardinal Foley during the years I worked in Rome. He was an outstanding priest, blessed with a self-deprecating sense of humor, a love for the Blessed Mother and a total dedication to the Church. His affable manner will be missed by all who knew him. May the Lord grant him rest and eternal reward for his tireless labors on behalf of God’s people.
