Cardinal DiNardo Remembering Archbishop Sambi
July 28, 2011
Dear friends in Christ,
I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. As Pope Benedict XVI's personal representative to the United States, Archbishop Sambi was a friend and guide to all Catholics in America. He loved the Church in the United States and was very good to the many bishops with whom he worked.
Archbishop Sambi had a long and distinguished career in the Vatican diplomatic corps. His time in the United States was marked by his lucid mind, a great sense of humor and total dedication to the priesthood. I clearly remember the phone call that Archbishop Sambi made to me when I was named a cardinal in 2007. True to form, his phone call was both serious and very witty. Archbishop Sambi's affable manner and wisdom will be missed by all who knew him.
Archbishop Sambi was a model priest, joyfully offering his life in service to God's people. May the Lord grant him rest and eternal reward for his tireless labors on behalf of the Church.
Sincerely,
Daniel Cardinal DiNardo
