Two weeks ago the priests of the Archdiocese gathered together for three days in Galveston for ongoing formation and fraternity. This occurs every other year and is an excellent time for the priests of this local Church to be with one another in prayer and solidarity, in learning and discussion, and in conversation and good fun.
Since our parishes are so large and demanding many of our priests do not really get an occasion to see each other that frequently. The Priests' Convocation gives a great opportunity for our clergy to slow down, pray and reflect and be refreshed.
We have a committee of priests and laypeople who work very diligently to provide an excellent time of renewal for all.
In addition to the regular schedule of meetings and free time this year, the priests were able to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of priesthood of Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Fiorenza. He has spent all but five years of that priesthood here in the Archdiocese and is very well beloved by our priests. He was Principal Celebrant of Mass and was the guest of honor at a very fine dinner one evening.
I know that all of the clergy, religious and faithful of Galveston-Houston join with our priests in saying: "Happy Anniversary, Archbishop Fiorenza! ‘Ad Multos Annos!'" Thank you for your priestly and episcopal zeal and faithful witness these many years!
The Convocation this year was totally focused on the Sacrament of Reconciliation, one of the chief and beautiful ministries of the ordained priesthood.
There were excellent presentations by Monsignor Frank Rossi of our own Archdiocese and by Monsignor Michael Heher of the Diocese of Orange, Calif. Part of this input dealt with the history and recent practice of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and another part on the spirituality of the priest that is necessary for him to celebrate the Sacrament himself and to be a good reconciler, teacher and doctor of souls for penitents.
Obviously, some of this involves learning and relearning good methods of approach to those who come. But in the conversations in small groups and large group assemblies, it was the very spiritual dimension of the priest, his care for Scripture and his ability to LISTEN that evoked the best aspects of this convocation.
Ultimately there was a realization that the priest, acting in the person of Christ in absolution, must also be an obedient agent of the Holy Spirit in helping penitents discern how the Lord calls them to reconciliation and a renewed purpose for a deeper Christian life in this Sacrament. The discussions were very good and animated.
Our priests do very good work and face the stresses of large parishes and lesser numbers.
I ask you to pray intentionally and intensely for our priests and to beg the Lord to send more workers for the harvest.
The Archdiocese continues to grow and we do need more priests and more women and men in consecrated religious life. The Serra Club, parish Vocation Committees and others work strenuously for this goal.
But every Catholic on the boat of the Church needs to call out to the Lord, who may, at times, seem to be asleep in the boat as He was with the Apostles on the storm tossed Lake of Galilee.
It is only at the prayers and cries of the faithful on board that the Lord rises up and calms the seas! Keep praying! †

Hace dos semanas, los sacerdotes de la Arquidiócesis se reunieron para formación continua y fraternidad durante tres días en Galveston. Esto ocurre cada dos años y es una excelente oportunidad para que los sacerdotes de esta Iglesia local se reúnan en oración y solidaridad, para aprender y discutir; conversar y disfrutar de buena diversión.
Ya que nuestras parroquias son tan grandes y requieren de mucho trabajo, muchos de nuestros sacerdotes en realidad no tienen ocasión de frecuentarse. La Convocación de Sacerdotes le da una gran oportunidad a nuestro clero de descansar, orar, reflexionar y refrescarse.
Tenemos un Comité de sacerdotes y laicos que trabajan diligentemente para proporcionar un excelente momento de renovación para todos.
Este año, además de las reuniones programadas y tiempo de descanso, los sacerdotes celebraron el 60 º aniversario de ordenación sacerdotal del Arzobispo Emérito Joseph Fiorenza. A excepción de 5 años, él ha pasado todo su sacerdocio aquí en la Arquidiócesis y es muy querido por nuestros sacerdotes. Fue el Celebrante Principal de la Misa y el invitado de honor en una muy buena cena ofrecida una de las noches.
Sé que todo el clero, religiosos y fieles de Galveston-Houston se unen a nuestros sacerdotes en decir: "Feliz aniversario, Arzobispo Fiorenza!" "Ad Multos Annos!" Gracias por su celo sacerdotal y episcopal y fiel testigo todos estos años!
La convocatoria de este año se centró totalmente en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación, uno de los principales y hermosos ministerios del sacerdocio ministerial.
Hubo excelentes presentaciones por Monseñor Frank Rossi de nuestra propia Arquidiócesis y por Monseñor Michael Heher de la Diócesis de Orange, California. Parte de estas presentaciones fueron sobre la historia y práctica reciente del Sacramento de la Reconciliación y la otra parte sobre la espiritualidad del sacerdote necesaria para que él mismo celebre el Sacramento y sea un buen reconciliador, maestro y médico de las almas de los penitentes.
Obviamente, algo de esto implica aprender y reaprender buenos métodos de contacto para con los que se acercan. Pero en las conversaciones de los grupos pequeños y en los grupos grandes, fue la misma dimensión espiritual del sacerdote, su atención a las Escrituras y su capacidad de ESCUCHAR lo que evocó los mejores aspectos de esta convocatoria.
Al final, se entendió que el sacerdote, actuando en la persona de Cristo en la absolución, debe también ser un agente obediente al Espíritu Santo para ayudar a los penitentes a discernir cómo el Señor los llama a la reconciliación y a un renovado propósito de una vida cristiana más profunda. Las discusiones fueron muy buenas y muy animadas.
Nuestros sacerdotes hacen un muy buen trabajo y afrontan las presiones que conllevan las grandes parroquias y un menor número de sacerdotes.
Les pido que oren intencional e intensamente por nuestros sacerdotes y pidan al Señor que envíe más obreros para la cosecha.
La Arquidiócesis continúa creciendo y necesitamos más sacerdotes y más mujeres y hombres en la vida religiosa consagrada. El Club Serra, Comités de Vocaciones parroquiales y otros trabajan con tenacidad para este objetivo.
Pero todos los católicos en la barca de la Iglesia tiene que llamar al Señor , quien puede , a veces, parece estar dormido en la barca, como estuvo con los Apóstoles en la tormenta en el Lago de Galilea.
Es sólo con las oraciones y el llanto de los fieles a bordo que el Señor salta y calma los mares! Sigan orando!
