During the months of February through early April the Archdiocese conducted consultations for the upcoming 2015 Synod of Bishops on “The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Contemporary World.” The vehicle for this consultation, which was placed on our Archdiocesan website, was the document issued by the “Mini-Synod” on the Family when it concluded its preliminary work after meeting last October in Rome.
The observations and proposals in that 2014 “relatio” (as it is called) were quite extensive and a bit cumbersome. In our own case, in addition to the opportunity to comment on the upcoming Synod, there was also a day-long consultation with our Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and a briefer meeting with the Presbyteral Council. The Family Life Office also engaged with various family groups and family life ministers in this local Church. The online survey results came to 364 pages!
Both as local Shepherd and as an elected Member of the Synod in Rome this October, I found it important to read all the material provided. I want to offer my thanks for all who took the time and energy to comment upon all or parts of the survey. If there was one unanimous comment from the participants, it was that the survey was too long and complicated. I agree with that sentiment.
No consensus emerged from the responses on any of the questions from the survey. But some larger groups of answers were important. This was particularly true for responses to family formation in the faith and in the sacrament of marriage.
A large minority of respondents expressed the urgent need to support young families and to begin formation and catechesis on marriage and family life very early. They reasoned that the marriage preparation that is done now comes too late in a young person’s life. However, there was not much agreement on how such formation should be done. Some favored more school and religious education work while others emphasized having more frequent family-friendly events at parishes. The Sunday Homily was also mentioned as a place for marriage and family catechesis.
A number of the respondents astutely mentioned that the variety of cultural situations in Houston make the formation of the family more challenging. What the survey mentioned as “extreme situations” was seen to be common in this Archdiocese. Some respondents criticized the Church in general and the Archdiocese in particular for not allowing sufficient resources to provide human and spiritual formation for families. Others cited numerous diocesan programs that are not publicized well in parishes. There was a very energetic minority that kept emphasizing the Theology of the Body of St. John Paul II and the need to make it continually more available to the people and to the families of this local Church.
On some of the more controversial sections of the survey instrument the greatest consensus was achieved by the importance of upholding the indissolubility of marriage. From there, however, there was very great disagreement among the respondents as to the practical and pastoral issues about this reality. A very strong minority emphasized accompanying families in all the difficulties and challenges they face. Of this group most did not favor access to the sacraments for those who were divorced and remarried civilly. Whereas some were most intent that the Church show more mercy and accommodation to such couples and families. Another strong minority reasoned that the Church must be firm in maintaining its current discipline.
A large number of respondents, some speaking from personal experience, asked that the annulment procedures in the Church be simplified or streamlined. The length of time involved in moving through the annulment process was criticized.
The questions on people with same-sex orientation and same-sex marriage did not receive a large number of respondents. Those who did respond were in very vigorous disagreement about how to deal with these situations. The majority favored no change in Church teaching and asked for greater invitations to persons in such situations to accept the teaching of the Faith on homosexuality. A very strong, but small group, asked for a change in either the Church’s teaching or in the manner of welcoming same-sex couples.
Almost all the respondents were cognizant of the great challenges that our culture presents to families and to the Sacrament of Marriage. They believe that all families need more support from the Church since other aspects of our culture seem either less interested or even hostile to the beauty of marriage and family life.
I am grateful for all the responses, and they made for a good reading of what is happening at various grassroots level of our parishes and institutions right now. They will be helpful for me as I prepare to go to the Synod this October. May the Lord bless all who generously spent time in considering the survey and its accompanying documentation. May the Lord also open his mercy and love to all our families in this local Church. †
Durante los meses de febrero hasta principios de abril la Arquidiócesis llevó a cabo consultas para el próximo Sínodo de los Obispos 2015 sobre "La vocación y la Misión de la Familia en el Mundo Contemporáneo". El vehículo para esta consulta, que fue colocado en nuestro sitio web de la Arquidiócesis, fue el documento emitido por el "mini-sínodo" sobre la Familia cuando concluyó su trabajo preliminar después de reunirse en octubre pasado en Roma.
Las observaciones y propuestas en ese "relatio" 2014 (como se le llama) fueron bastante extensas y un poco engorrosas. En nuestro caso, además de la oportunidad de comentar sobre el próximo Sínodo, también hubo una consulta de un día con nuestro Consejo Pastoral Arquidiocesano y una reunión breve con el Consejo Presbiteral. La Oficina de Vida Familiar también participó con varios grupos familiares y ministros de vida familiar en esta Iglesia local. Los resultados de la encuesta en línea llegaron a 364 páginas!
Tanto como Pastor local y como miembro electo del Sínodo en Roma este mes de octubre, me pareció importante leer todo el material proporcionado. Quiero ofrecer mi agradecimiento a todos los que se tomaron el tiempo y la energía en comentar toda o parte de la encuesta. Si había un comentario unánime de los participantes, fue que la encuesta era demasiado larga y complicada. Estoy de acuerdo con ese sentimiento.
No se llegó a un consenso de las respuestas en cualquiera de las preguntas de la encuesta. Pero algunos grupos grandes de respuestas fueron importantes. Esto fue particularmente cierto en las respuestas sobre la formación de la familia en la fe y en el Sacramento del Matrimonio. Una gran minoría de los encuestados expresaron la urgente necesidad de apoyar a las familias jóvenes y el comenzar la formación y catequesis sobre el matrimonio y la vida familiar muy temprana. Ellos razonaron que la preparación para el matrimonio que se hace ahora llega demasiado tarde en la vida de una persona joven. Sin embargo, no había mucho acuerdo sobre cómo debe hacerse dicha formación. Algunos favorecían más la escuela y el trabajo de educación religiosa, mientras que otros hicieron hincapié en tener eventos para toda la familia con más frecuencia en las parroquias. La homilía dominical también se mencionó como un lugar para el matrimonio y la catequesis familiar.

En algunas de las secciones más controvertidas de la encuesta el mayor consenso se logró por la importancia de la defensa de la indisolubilidad del matrimonio. A partir de ahí, sin embargo, no era muy grande el desacuerdo entre los encuestados en cuanto a las cuestiones prácticas y pastorales sobre esta realidad. Una grande minoría hizo hincapié en acompañar a las familias en todas las dificultades y desafíos que enfrentan. De este grupo la mayoría no favorecen el acceso a los sacramentos para los que se divorcian y vuelven a casar civilmente. Mientras que algunos tienen más intención que la Iglesia muestre más misericordia y acomodo a tales parejas y familias. Otra fuerte minoría razonó que la Iglesia debe ser firme en el mantenimiento de la disciplina actual.
Un gran número de los encuestados, algunos hablando desde la experiencia personal, pidió que los procedimientos de anulación en la Iglesia sean simplificados. La duración de tiempo en el proceso de anulación ha sido criticado.
Los encuestados no respondieron en gran número a las preguntas sobre las personas con orientación homosexual y el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo. Los que sí respondieron estuvieron en gran desacuerdo sobre cómo hacer frente a estas situaciones. La mayoría se inclinó a ningún cambio en la enseñanza de la Iglesia y pidió mayores invitaciones a las personas en este tipo de situaciones a aceptar la enseñanza de la fe sobre la homosexualidad. Un grupo muy fuerte, pero pequeño, pidió un cambio en cualquiera de las enseñanzas de la Iglesia o en la forma de aceptación a las parejas del mismo sexo.
Casi todos los encuestados se han hecho conscientes de los grandes retos que nuestra cultura representa para las familias y para el Sacramento del Matrimonio. Ellos creen que todas las familias necesitan más apoyo de la Iglesia ya que otros aspectos de nuestra cultura parecen menos interesados o incluso hostiles a la belleza del matrimonio y la vida familiar.
Estoy muy agradecido por todas las respuestas, dieron para una buena lectura de lo que está sucediendo en los niveles fundamentales de nuestras parroquias e instituciones en este momento. Todo esto será de utilidad para mí al prepararme para ir al Sínodo este mes de octubre. Que el Señor bendiga a todos los que generosamente tomaron el tiempo en la encuesta y su documentación adjunta. Que el Señor también derrame su misericordia y amor a todas nuestras familias en esta Iglesia local. †
