The Red Mass tradition dates from the 13th century. It is named for the red vestments worn by the priest-celebrants and the scarlet robes worn by the Lord High Justices. Liturgical red is proper for a votive Mass of the Holy Spirit and symbolizes a willingness to defend the truth. In the United States today, a Red Mass is celebrated in most major metropolitan areas and is attended by judges, lawyers, public officials, law faculty, and law students.

You do not have to be Catholic to attend this event. All are welcome who wish to receive blessings at the opening of the 2023 judicial year.

About Archbishop Listecki

The Most Reverend Jerome Edward Listecki was named the 11th archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee by Pope Benedict XVI. Archbishop Listecki succeeded the Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan, who was named archbishop of New York on February 23, 2009, and installed as archbishop of New York April 15, 2009. Archbishop Listecki previously served as bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse. He was installed as bishop on March 1, 2005, succeeding the Most Reverend Raymond L. Burke.

Born March 12, 1949, Archbishop Listecki is the son of Harry and Alfreda (Kasprzk) Listecki. They are both deceased. He has one sister, Mary (Penny), who resides in Tinley Park, Ill., a south Chicago suburb. He is both a canon lawyer and a civil lawyer.

His Episcopal motto is the phrase "Life is Christ," from St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians (Phil 1:18-26).
