Walk the walk of the poor
August 9, 2012
HOUSTON — The Society of St. Vincent de Paul invites the public to be a part of the Friends of the Poor Walk. The one-mile walk is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29.
The Friends of the Poor Walk is a national program coordinated by the development team at the national office of the society. The inaugural event took place in 2008 with the purpose of providing local conferences and councils the framework to host an event that would raise funds for their conference or council. The event has grown each year, attracting over 18,000 walkers, raising over $1.4 million nationally with more than 1,000 conferences and councils participating.
The event is designed to help raise awareness of the challenges faced by the nation’s poor and to raise funds to be used in direct service to those living in poverty. Currently there are three walks scheduled throughout the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
There are several ways to help: as a sponsor, a volunteer, creating a corporate team, or by encouraging individuals to register to walk. To register or for more information visit w ww.svdpfriendsofthepoorwalk.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
