HOUSTON — The Galveston-Houston Knights of Columbus Charities will present Daniel Cardinal DiNardo’s fifth annual Shepherd’s Cup Charity Golf Classic benefiting Catholic education, faith formation and St. Mary Seminary on Monday, Oct. 22, at Kingwood Country Club.
The kickoff event for the tourney is set for Sunday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. with Mass, dinner and an auction at St. Mary Seminary. On Monday, registration begins at 10 a.m. and the putting contest will continue through 11:30 a.m. Shotgun start is at noon. A banquet and awards will follow.
This year a Team Spirit Award will be given to the team that wears the most unique uniforms. This contest was inspired by a team including Father Vincent Tran, pastor at St. Albert of Trapani Catholic Church, and Father Thomas Joseph Dolce, parochial vicar at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church.
Father Tran has participated in the Shepherd’s Cup for at least 4 years, when he was still a seminarian.
“It’s good to have the presence of seminarians to remind the folks who they were supporting and it’s a day away from studies to do something fun,” he said. “I continued to come back ever since, even after ordination.”
Father Tran said the event is a great opportunity to visit with other priests and upcoming seminarians and especially to show support to the cardinal.
“Overall for me, when priests and people gather, it’s Church, even when it’s on the golf course,” he said.
Father Dolce also began playing at the event while a seminarian.
“I think I’ve played or volunteered every year the Shepherd’s Cup been held,” he said. “It is a great event and there are some great people there. And it’s a lot of fun!”
Sean and Kari Tracey are the title sponsors of the event. Ronnie Gonzales is serving as Tournament Chair.
Sponsorships are still available. To become a sponsor, register a team, volunteer or get more information, visit www.shepherdscup.org or call 713-652-4461.
