Daily Vine provides online updates from the Archdiocese
October 28, 2014
HOUSTON — The Archdiocesan Web site, www.archgh.org offers a section of daily news and information to help the faithful stay informed and grow in faith.
The Daily Vine, the daily blog of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, serves up a variety of content from breaking news and current events to spiritual growth and links to valuable resources.
“There is such a wide variety of news and events that take place in the Archdiocese each and every day,” said Sean O’Driscoll, web content manager for the Archdiocese. “The blog allows us to share information in a more timely fashion than the newspaper.”
In an average week, one post may offer information about the saint whose feast day is celebrated that day, while another might share information from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
One post might highlight an upcoming event and provide registration information, while another might cover a recent event that took place with photos.
The Daily Vine is also used to provide information about Archdiocesan-wide collections that are taken up throughout the year, such as recent collection for the Propagation of the Faith.
As more people continue to get their news and information in a digital format, it is important for the Archdiocese to be present in that space, O’Driscoll said.
“The Daily Vine allows us to connect with people where they are,” he said. “If they are online, then that’s where we need to be. It is one of the key ways that we are participating the new evangelization.”
In his message for the 47th World Communications Day in 2013, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said that, “The digital environment is not a parallel or purely virtual world, but is part of the daily experience of many people, especially the young… Believers are increasingly aware that, unless the Good News is made known also in the digital world, it may be absent in the experience of many people for whom this existential space is important.”
The Daily Vine is just one part of the Archdiocese’s presence, including the Archdiocesan Web site (www.archgh.org), social media such as Facebook (www.facebook.com/archgh) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/archgh), video on YouTube (www.youtube.com/archgh), and even an audio podcast channel (search for “Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston” on a favorite podcast app).
“We are looking forward to increasing the type and amount of digital content we are offering, including more bilingual content and more digital media, as well as a few surprises,” O’Driscoll said.
