The words of the Lord are pure, like silver from the furnace, seven times refined!
The words of Sacred Scripture have many analogies and comparisons, especially in the Psalms. The Psalmist will use many images to praise the Lord, to instruct or edify us, or to call for sorrow and repentance.
God’s Word is already seven times refined — perfect — before it is ever uttered. How beautiful like silver it is. Once it is uttered, it must then be seven times refined in us. That is a major problem, for the Word of God is not very refined in us at all! We are engaged in lazy listening!
The Word of God is treated as background music, an ambient sound of noise. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused many sorrows and setbacks, difficulties and hardships. At the same time, with our sense of normalcy suspended, this pandemic is an opportunity for us to put aside some everyday things and focus every day, however briefly, on God’s Word in the Scriptures.
I particularly invite us during this Easter Season to pick up the Acts of the Apostles and initiate a careful, slow reading of the text, bringing our own intelligence, experience and emotions to our reading and thinking. St. Luke is the author of Acts, and he is constantly introducing various persons, some important some less so, but all the characters are moved by the principal Agent in the book, the HOLY SPIRIT.
The Spirit cleans, purifies and animates the person, five, six, even seven times refined — so that he or she can speak and witness with boldness about Jesus Christ and about the faith that sends each one out to testify.
Watch Peter and John testify in the days after Pentecost, their cure of a lame man, the astonishment of the crowds and the jealousy of the religious leaders. See how Peter and John answer with boldness. They suffer for that witness but are purified and made stronger.
Watch what happened after the martyrdom of Stephen, the first martyr, how fierce persecution breaks out and all but the apostles are scattered. Who is scattered? Not Hebrew speaking Christians like the Twelve, but Greek-speaking Christians like Stephen and others pursued by the master enemy Saul.
But this causes witness and boldness to flourish in further geographical regions, the conversion of Saul to Paul, the branching out to Antioch where the first believers are called Christians! The Word is being refined, and refined, and strengthened.
Something similar is happening today in this difficult time. Many people are watching us on livestream and social media. When we begin to appear again, there will be many who ask us about the hope we carry in our hearts.
The Scriptures read will have moved us interiorly, and we must answer with courtesy, kindness and boldness!
Boldness is not being rash, but only a sign of the Holy Spirit’s refining us.
Let us think and pray about this; let us read the Scriptures, the Acts of the Apostles. Let us bring charity and outreach to those in need or sorrow.
Let us spread joy. Let us witness!

¡Las palabras del Señor son puras, como la plata en el horno, siete veces refinadas! Las palabras de la Sagrada Escritura tienen muchas analogías y comparaciones, especialmente en los Salmos. El salmista usará muchas imágenes para alabar al Señor, para instruirnos o edificarnos, o para llamar a la contrición y al arrepentimiento.
La Palabra de Dios ya está siete veces refinada --perfecta—aun antes de que se pronuncie. Es tan hermosa como la plata. Una vez que se pronuncia, debe ser refinada siete veces en nosotros. ¡Ese es un gran problema, porque la Palabra de Dios no está muy refinada en nosotros! Somos muy perezosos en la escucha
La Palabra de Dios es tratada como música de fondo, como un sonido ambiental. La pandemia del Covid-19 ha causado muchas penas y contrariedades, dificultades y penalidades. Al mismo tiempo, con nuestra normalidad suspendida, esta pandemia es una oportunidad para que dejemos de lado algunas cosas cotidianas y nos centremos todos los días, aunque sea brevemente, en la Palabra de Dios en las Escrituras.
Particularmente los invito durante esta temporada de Pascua a leer los Hechos de los Apóstoles e iniciar una lectura cuidadosa y lenta, aportando nuestra propia inteligencia, experiencia y emociones a nuestra lectura y pensamiento. San Lucas es el autor de Hechos, y constantemente presenta a varias personas, algunas importantes y otras no tanto, pero todos son movidos por el Agente principal en el libro, el ESPÍRITU SANTO.
El Espíritu limpia, purifica y anima a la persona, cinco, seis, incluso siete veces refinada, para que pueda hablar y dar testimonio de Jesucristo con valentía y de la fe que mueve a cada uno a dar testimonio.
Vean a Pedro y a Juan dar testimonio en los días posteriores a Pentecostés, a la cura de un hombre cojo, el asombro de las multitudes y los celos de los líderes religiosos. Vean cómo Pedro y Juan responden con valor. Sufren por ese testimonio, pero se purifican y se fortalecen.
Miren lo que sucedió después del martirio de Esteban, --el primer mártir--, cómo estalla la feroz persecución y todos, excepto los apóstoles, están dispersos. ¿Quién está disperso? No los cristianos de habla hebrea como los Doce, sino los cristianos de habla griega como Esteban y otros perseguidos por el maestro enemigo Saulo.
¡Pero esto hace que el testimonio y el valor florezcan en otras regiones geográficas, la conversión de Saulo a Pablo, el extenderse a Antioquía, donde los primeros creyentes son llamados Cristianos! La Palabra va siendo refinada, y refinada, y fortalecida.
Algo similar está sucediendo hoy en este tiempo difícil. Muchas personas nos están mirando en vivo y en las redes sociales. Cuando comencemos a aparecer de nuevo, habrá muchos que nos preguntarán acerca de la esperanza que llevamos en nuestros corazones.
¡Las Escrituras leídas nos habrán conmovido interiormente, y debemos responder con cortesía, amabilidad y valor!
Tener valor no es ser imprudente, sino solo una señal de que el Espíritu Santo nos está refinando.
Pensemos y recemos por esto; leamos las Escrituras, los Hechos de los Apóstoles. Llevemos caridad y ayudemos a los necesitados o afligidos.
Difundamos la alegría. ¡Seamos testigos!
