Our Catholic schools differ from the public school system in the areas of testing, state accreditation standards and management. First, all Catholic schools in the State of Texas are accredited through the Texas Catholic Conference Accreditation Commission.
Another big difference within the Catholic schools is the use of a norm referenced nationally standardized testing program. Testing is done annually to comprehensively evaluate a student's progress. We do not use TAKS, which is a criterion referenced test that is normed only in the state of Texas.
There are 59 Catholic schools in 6 counties in and around the Houston area. Catholic schools are site-based managed. For example, each school has its own school board which is advisory. Within broad guidelines, each school sets its own beginning and ending dates, holidays, in-service dates.
In addition, there are different types of schools in our network of Catholic schools. Some schools are Archdiocesan. Other schools are owned and run privately by religious orders, by an independent board of trustees or by a regional board.
