Church agencies challenge HHS for violating religious freedom
May 21, 2012

In light of the news that 43 dioceses, hospitals, schools and church agencies have filed lawsuits around the nation on May 21 saying the HHS mandate violates religious freedom, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo offered the following statement:

"The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is fully supportive of the litigation filed today. It makes clear that this is an issue of religious liberty.

The lawsuits filed by the Dioceses of Dallas and Fort Worth effectively articulate the issues and reflect the position of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Therefore, we are evaluating whether a separate lawsuit filed by this Archdiocese will be of further value in achieving our mutual goals."

I wrote my comment above because I had a feeling that Church in the USA appears to be more and more political and moving to the far right. Having read Mr. Dionne's oped in the Houston Chronicle today, I realize my feelings are correct! I sincerely hope that the 195 dioceses that did not go to court will overshadow the actions of 43 dioceses. The outspoken clergy appear to have more of an anti-President Obama agenda under the guise of protecting religious liberty. We are a nation of all faiths and cultures and President Obama is an intelligent and broadminded leader for ALL citizens of our diverse nation. President Obama has already shown the Church he is open to compromise and rather than begin with a lawsuit, the Church should continue to patiently pursue further negotiations with the Administration. Patience is a virtue!!

A question from a citizen and communicant, why can't the Church wait for the 1 year time period laid out by the Government to resolve their concerns in the HHS mandate. Why is it necessary to bring lawsuits now particularly since it is an election year. Also, I would like to know if the prescription drugs like Viagra or similar for Erectile Dysfunction is also a concern of the religious institutions that provide healthcare insurance for their male employees. Are only drugs for women in question? Are these drugs also not interfering with the natural order of life and health?

I am proud that my Church has taken such a strong stand on the HHS mandate issue. Without our 1st Amendment the remaining Amendments aren't worth the paper they are written on. That's why it's the 1st one. God bless the Catholic Church.
