Learn more about the Roman Missal starting on Catechetical Sunday, Sept. 18
September 2, 2011

On Sept. 18, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday – an annual opportunity for all Catholics to rededicate themselves to our shared call to hand on the faith and bear witness to the Gospel.

This year’s Catechetical Sunday theme, “Do This in Memory of Me,” focuses on the Eucharist – which is fitting, considering the Church is also preparing to receive the new translation of the Roman Missal. With this third edition of the Roman Missal, the English-speaking Church will use common, newly-translated prayers and chants during the Mass. Catechists will play an important role in the introduction of these texts at Mass and in unpacking their meaning in the years to come.

A recent CARA survey reported one in four active Catholics are aware of the coming changes to the Mass, but Catechetical Sunday marks the official beginning of the period of formation on the new translation. Listen up at your parish for information and formation on the Roman Missal starting Sept. 18.

The U.S. bishops offer a website with more resources on Catechetical Sunday. Take a glance at the materials and consider how you are invited to active participation in the Mass and in the life of the Church today!
