How do you keep faith?
February 7, 2013

October 11 marked the start of the Year of Faith. Every Thursday on the Daily Vine, parishioners across the Archdiocese will weigh in on how they grow in faith, struggle with faith and share faith. This week we hear from Fernando Valles who shares how faith shapes his life.

Tell us what faith means to you.

October 11 marked the start of the Year of Faith, which Pope Benedict XVI announced to help all Catholics appreciate the gift of faith and deepen our relationship with God.

To commemorate this special year, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is asking readers of the Daily Vine and the Texas Catholic Herald to tell us what the gift of faith means to them, how they share and grow in faith or how faith shapes their daily living.

We'll post reflections from Catholics in the pew every Thursday of the Year of Faith, Oct. 11, 2012 to Nov. 24, 2013.

This week’s reflection comes from Archdiocesan Catholic Fernando Valles who shares how faith shapes his life.

Fernando Valles

"Faith shapes my everyday life because it makes me a better person and allows me to be closer to Jesus. I plan to have fewer sins ...This will help me be a better person, and make me realize that others need help, I shall help as much as I can. It makes me more responsible and helpful, and to do everything when needed and more.

I have to start with myself – to be responsible, honest, respectful, etc. before I can help the other. If I have all those things at a high level then I can help the others around me that are in need of help.

For me my faith has been a big part of my life. I have learned so much from the retreats and the things I'm involved in the church and with the youth council. They have prompted me to reflect more on my life, the choices I make and how they will affect me in the future. For those that haven't learned the good path yet, I will guide them to choose the right path to God, make good choices and reflect on their lives.

Everyday I'm getting better and better at going towards God and helping others get there."
