African American Catholics

The Vicar for Catholics of African Descent serves the African, African American, and Caribbean Catholic communities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The Vicar works with Archdiocesan offices and agencies in implementing the mission and goals of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston along with the National Black Catholic Pastoral Plan through collaboration, implementation, advocacy, leadership, and evangelization. The Vicar for Catholics of African Descent provides a voice and representation at the decision-making level within the archdiocesan structure, serves as a vehicle to provide spiritual, cultural, educational, and social development for Catholics of African Descent, identifies the needs, concerns, and issues of these Catholic communities and communicates these needs, concerns, and issues to established Archdiocesan offices and agencies, and coordinates constituency ministry and supports on-going pastoral ministry.
 

Unity Explosion 2011

Unity Explosion is celebrating 21 years of a liturgically focused, faith-based evangelization conference. This explosion of faith among Catholics of African descent will be held June 15-19, 2011 at the Marriot Westchase, 2900 Briarpark Drive in Houston, Texas. The conference theme is "Evangelization...Am I a Witness?"

Unity Explosion will open with the Roderick J. Bell Institute for African American Sacred Music on June 15, 2011. This two-day Institute provides musicians, ministers of music, and those interested in music as a ministry with a forum for professional and spiritual growth, as well as networking opportunities. The full conference opens on Thursday evening, June 16th with workshop on Friday & Saturday, June 17th & 18th. The closing liturgy is Sunday, June 19, and is open to the public
