Thank you for your interest in Catholic schools where teachers can really teach and students can pray. God is present! Educating mind, heart and spirit is the essence of Catholic education within the Archdiocese. There is a sense of community and love of God and neighbor in our schools.
Why choose Catholic schools? Faith formation is the most important reason. We offer a challenging curriculum, promote self-discipline, and teach respect for self and others. Catholic schools prepare students to be productive citizens and provide a safe and drug-free environment for the children.
Our Catholic schools differ from the public school system in the areas of testing, state accreditation standards and management. First, all Catholic schools in the State of Texas are accredited through the Texas Catholic Conference Accreditation Commission.
Another big difference within the Catholic schools is the use of a norm referenced nationally standardized testing program. Testing is done annually to comprehensively evaluate a student’s progress. We do not use TAKS, which is a criterion referenced test that is normed only in the state of Texas.
There are 59 Catholic schools in 6 counties in and around the Houston area. Catholic schools are site-based managed. For example, each school has its own school board which is advisory. Within broad guidelines, each school sets its own beginning and ending dates, holidays, in-service dates.
In addition, there are different types of schools in our network of Catholic schools. Some schools are Archdiocesan. Other schools are owned and run privately by religious orders, by an independent board of trustees or by a regional board.
Since 1847, Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston have made significant contributions to our society…to business, government, industry, education, and the Church. Archbishop Daniel Cardinal DiNardo has stated, “Our young scholars must be helped to understand the importance of their Catholic Identity and the deep relationship between faith and our society. Faith formation is one of the most important ways by which Catholic Schools fulfill their commitment to the dignity of the person and the building of community.”
