About Bishop George A. Sheltz

En Español

Auxiliary Bishop TERMINOLOGY|TERMINOLOGÍA

• George Arthur Sheltz was born in 1946 in Houston.

• He is the second oldest of three siblings (two sons and one daughter) born to the late George and Margaret Sheltz. Bishop Sheltz' brother, Father Anton Sheltz, lost his battle with heart disease in 2003 at the age of 53. His sister, Mary Margaret Keen, lives in Pearland.

• The new bishop comes from a family of Houston vocations. His father, Deacon George Sheltz, Sr., was in the first class of permanent deacons ordained for the Galveston-Houston diocese in 1972. His late brother, Anton Sheltz, was ordained a priest for the diocese in 1976. His uncle, Monsignor Anton Frank, was the first native Houstonian ordained for the diocese in 1933. Together, his father, uncle, brother and Bishop Sheltz have given 150 years of ordained ministry to the Archdiocese.

• Bishop Sheltz was educated entirely in Houston, at Annunciation Catholic School, St. Thomas High School, the University of St. Thomas and St. Mary's Seminary.

• More than 40 of Bishop Sheltz' classmates from St. Thomas High School are expected to attend his Mass of ordination.

• Bishop John Morkovsky ordained Bishop Sheltz a priest for the Diocese of Galveston-Houston in 1971.

• He has spent 36 of his 40-plus years as a priest at Catholic parishes across the Archdiocese: Assumption Church; Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral; St. Vincent de Paul Church; Christ the Redeemer Church; Prince of Peace Church; and St. Anthony of Padua Church.

• He was named a Prelate of Honor with the title of "Monsignor" by Pope John Paul II in 2000.

• In 2007, Bishop Sheltz was appointed Director of Clergy Formation and Chaplaincy Services for the Archdiocese.

• Since 2010, he has served as the Vicar General and Chancellor for the Archdiocese, overseeing the administrative operations of the largest Roman Catholic diocese in Texas and the 12th largest in the United States.

• For his motto, Bishop Sheltz has selected the phrase, "Through Him, With Him, In Him." By these words from the Eucharistic prayer at Mass, Bishop Sheltz proclaims that as a bishop his ministry is to do all things through Christ, the Word sent into the world to proclaim God's love for all humanity.

• Bishop Sheltz is the fourth bishop to have graduated from St. Thomas High School. He joins Bishop John McCarthy, who was Bishop of Austin; Bishop Vincent M. Rizzotto, retired Auxiliary Bishop of Galveston-Houston; and Bishop Oscar Cantu, who now serves as Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio.

• During his years as a parish priest and at the Archdiocesan headquarters, Bishop Sheltz has served on the Archdiocesan Building Commission, the Presbyteral Council, the Priests' Personnel Board, St. Mary Seminary's Board and the Cardinal's Cabinet.

• He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

• The papal appointment also names Bishop Sheltz to be Titular Bishop of Irina.

• Bishop Sheltz traveled to Rome in March 2012 to meet with Pope Benedict XVI as a member of the U.S. Region 10 bishops' delegation making an Ad Limina visit to the Vatican.

• He is an avid electronics enthusiast, most recently becoming a faithful user of the iPad and iPhone. He also collects stamps as a hobby.

• The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston serves 1.2 million Catholics in 10 counties. It has the largest Catholic population in Texas and the 12th largest in the United States.
